High Land Mercantile

Located at the Denver International Airport (DEN) in the central core area of Concourses A and B, the High Land Mercantile reimagines the classic general store for today’s traveler, blending nostalgic charm with a fresh, modern design language. Positioned in a high-traffic hub, it serves as both a convenience stop and a style statement, offering snacks, souvenirs, travel essentials, health and beauty products, and a streamlined Grab & Go station. The result is a retail environment that feels at once familiar and elevated: a place where practicality meets delight. At the heart of the concept is a celebration of rounded forms. The exterior façade, clad in white wood tambour, nods to old-time storefronts but with a crisp, contemporary execution. This curvature continues inside, where softened corners and fluid lines encourage circulation and create a sense of flow. At the center, the point of sale is anchored beneath a coral-colored polycarbonate canopy, casting a warm, diffuse glow that draws travelers inside. Above, a bright white ceiling amplifies light and openness, ensuring the space feels inviting even in the busiest moments. The color palette is bold yet balanced. Bright white tile provides a clean backdrop for energetic pops of teal and coral, while bronze metal accents and deep black elements ground the scheme with richness and contrast. Coral highlights key interaction points, framing moments of focus throughout the store. A standout detail — bronze penny tile wrapping a central column and inset into display niches — adds shimmer and texture. In the glow of the lighting, the tile subtly shifts in tone as visitors move, creating a kinetic effect that nods to the currency of trade that once defined mercantile culture. Fixtures and displays are arranged to strike a balance between efficiency and discovery. A clear circulation spine supports quick shopping, while varied shelving heights, feature walls, and inset displays invite browsing. The Grab & Go station, positioned prominently at the entrance, streamlines the experience for travelers in a hurry while maintaining visual continuity with the more leisurely zones. Throughout the store, curated details — a glint of bronze, a pop of coral, the gleam of penny tile — punctuate the journey, transforming a routine errand into a memorable experience. High Land Mercantile is a bridge between eras, honoring the approachable warmth of the general store while embracing a contemporary sensibility. It demonstrates that even within the fast pace of modern travel, thoughtful design can spark curiosity, encourage pause, and create moments of delight.
