When the College of Media, Design, and Information (CMDI) was founded in 2015, it marked a historic moment, as it was the first new college established at the University of Colorado Boulder in over half a century. Since then, CMDI has flourished as a hub of creativity, collaboration, and inclusion, uniting seven distinct academic specialties through cross-disciplinary connections. Neoera was invited to design two flagship environments within the Center for Academic Success and Engagement (CASE), a striking "showpiece" building at the heart of campus. More than just another facility, CASE is CU Boulder’s gateway: the place where every prospective student begins their campus journey. With such visibility, the opportunity for impact was significant. Neoera embraced the challenge with a forward-looking approach that embodies CMDI’s spirit of innovation and collaboration. From the earliest sketches to final detailing, the design process was shaped by close collaboration between Neoera’s team and CMDI’s leadership. Together, they envisioned spaces that balance creativity and function while expressing the college’s ethos of experimentation, connection, and forward-thinking design. Neoera was tasked with creating two distinct yet interconnected spaces: A Dynamic Multipurpose Room: A bold steel-and-wood portal welcomes visitors into a 2,000 SF space designed as a canvas for creativity. More than a venue, this multipurpose room functions as an incubator for media and imagination. Flexible enough to host student exhibitions, large-scale events, and capstone projects, the space encourages interaction, showcasing student work while connecting CMDI with the broader CU Boulder community. Here, ideas are not only shared—they take flight. The Communication Department’s Home: Home to 22 faculty members, the Communication Department’s new headquarters blends efficiency with inspiration. Private offices, a welcoming reception area, a lounge, and a graduate student suite are carefully arranged to foster collaboration, creativity, and meaningful engagement. The result is a professional yet inviting environment that strengthens departmental identity. Neoera’s vision extended beyond the program’s boundaries. Rather than treating the corridor linking these spaces as merely a means of circulation, the design team transformed it into a sequence of sculptural alcoves, intimate environments for collaboration, study, and reflection. Warm wood accents frame angular forms, creating a rhythmic interplay of light, shadow, and texture. Each recessed nook functions as a semi-private retreat, equally suited to focused work or group dialogue. Acoustic fabric paneling strikes a balance between openness and quiet, while integrated lighting adds warmth and depth to the geometric architecture. Accessibility and flexibility remain central, welcoming diverse users with adaptable seating and layouts that cater to their needs. What could have been a pass-through became an experiential pathway, an environment that actively enriches the way students and faculty learn, work, and connect. Working within budgetary constraints, Neoera employed strategic choices in materials, light, and form to maximize impact. Every surface and detail was designed to reflect CMDI’s core values: pushing boundaries, embracing possibility, and fostering student success. The result is more than just a series of rooms; it is a cohesive environment that embodies the college’s mission. Innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity are not just ideas expressed within these walls; they are embedded in the architecture itself.
